Bayern Munich have confirmed that Sadio Mane will wear the No. 17 shirt during his time with the record winners.
On June 22nd, the transfer of Mane, who played for Liverpool and wore number 10 for the club, was finalized.
According to the FC Bayern website, Mane stated that he chose the number 17 from the available free jersey numbers and that he hopes to enjoy many victories with his team while wearing this number.
Now that we have all of our new teammates, I can’t wait to get started on our preseason workouts and get ready for the upcoming season.
Following Michael Cuisance’s departure from Bayern in January 2022, Mane will be given the No. 17 jersey that Cuisance wore throughout his time with the club. A number of notable players, including the decorated defender Jerome Boateng, the former captain Mark van Bommel, Christian Ziege, and Thorsten Fink, have also worn the number.
Mane has spent the previous four seasons wearing the No. 10 on his back at Liverpool. Prior to that, he wore the No. 19 on his back when playing for Bayern Munich, which was Alphonso Davies’ squad number. In addition to 33 and 21, he wore number 40 when competing for Red Bull Salzburg. Leroy Sane, who plays for Bayern Munich and now wears number 10, has indicated that he would like to wear that number for Senegal, who are the current holders of the Africa Cup of Nations title.
On July 18, Mane might make his debut for Bayern Munich when they play a pre-season friendly against DC United. The 30-year-old forward is expected to make his debut in a competitive game on August 30 against RB Leipzig, who are the current holders of the DFB Cup. Six days later, on September 2, he is scheduled to make his maiden Bundesliga appearance, which will take place away at Eintracht Frankfurt.
