Even in 2023, space is challenging. Instead of celebrating the successful launch of its new H3 rocket, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency is now attempting to determine what went wrong with today’s failed mission.

At 8:37 p.m. ET, the two-stage H3 rocket launched from the Tanegashima Space Center in Japan as planned. Things didn’t start to go awry until first stage separation, when ground controllers said they couldn’t confirm second stage engine starting. The rocket’s flight termination system was then activated by controllers when they decided there was “no chance” of completing the mission.
The problem of space still exists in 2023. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency is currently working to figure out what went wrong with today’s unsuccessful mission rather than celebrating the successful launch of its new H3 rocket.
