The fire broke out around 00.30 in one of the halls on the site and caused a lot of smoke. Six fire trucks and two aerial platforms were deployed to put out the blaze. At around 02:50 a.m., the security region reported that the fire was under control.
The asbestos that was released in the fire has not spread very far, the spokeswoman said. The grounds of the flower grower and the bicycle path along the Westdijk have been cordoned off pending the arrival of a specialized removal company. Soot and ash particles also fell in a residential area nearby. A sweeper is coming to sweep the streets clean, says the security region. People with soot or ash on their car are advised to rinse it off or go to the car wash.
The two burned-out barns are being pulled apart with demolition cranes. The fire service expects to be busy extinguishing the fire in the coming hours.
